Non-partisan Iowa Taxpayers Association confirms Culver budget tactics have forced property tax increases, created budget gap
(URBANDALE) – The non-partisan Iowa Taxpayers Association (ITA) has studied Iowa’s budget and today shared its findings that show big problems in three key areas, which will drive up property taxes and leave Iowa with a huge budget gap.
In a release today, the ITA states, “the overreliance of one-time funding for on-going expenses and a deepening burden for property taxpayers provides significant challenges for the current fiscal year and specifically for the 84th General Assembly.”
ITA noted that the budget signed by Gov. Chet Culver violates three key principles for sound budgeting:
1. Funding ongoing expenses from revenue sources that are non=sustainable one-time or time-limited sources
2. Diverting funds that are statutorily authorized for other purposes
3. Shifting program funding for education to the counties by underfunding property tax credits and school aid

Fallout continues from Democratic Governors Association’s failed experiment
News of Iowans for Responsible Government rapidly spreads across state, nation
(URBANDALE) – The Governor Branstad 2010 campaign today pieced together a sampling of clips demonstrated the failed experiment conducted by the Democratic Governor’s Association in Iowa’s Republican primary for governor.
“Donors and strategists in the DGA have to be shaking their heads at why they not only spent nearly $800,000 against Terry Branstad – but as to why they spent that money smearing Barack Obama, Bill Clinton and Nancay Pelosi as well,” said Branstad 2010 campaign manager Jeff Boeyink. “Iowans saw right through their distortions, and if Culver won’t reject the efforts of the DGA, it’s clear Iowans are ready to reject his reckless, irresponsible management this November.”
What they’re saying about Iowans for Responsible Government…
“Iowans for Responsible Government received all of its funding — $782,500 — for a series of ads likening the former governor to Bill Clinton and Nancy Pelosi
(URBANDALE) – IRS disclosure reports filed today confirm the 527 organization called Iowans for Responsible Government is indeed a group that was formed solely as a Democrat front group and funded entirely by the Democratic Governors Association, in a blatant attempt to derail Terry Branstad’s campaign for governor in the Republican primary.
The report, attached to this email, shows Iowans for Responsible Government raised $782,500 – all of which came from the Democratic Governors Association – and spent more than $767,000 of it on television advertisements and mailers that mischaracterized and smeared former Gov. Branstad’s record and positions.
Branstad 2010 Campaign Manager Jeff Boeyink says this group crossed a very serious line and needs to be held accountable for its actions:
“We were right all along. We have reached a new low in Iowa politics.
“A shadowy, out-of-state-funded group attempted to infiltrate the Republican primary for governor with distortions and smear tactics. This is wrong, and despite their best efforts, Iowa voters were smarter than this and chose Terry Branstad as the Republican nominee.
(URBANDALE) – The Governor Branstad 2010 campaign today launched its newest ad, “Exactly Right.”
The ad, which will run statewide on network and cable, can be seen here:
Branstad 2010 campaign manager Jeff Boeyink released the following statement:
“While the Culver campaign is trying to mislead and misdirect Iowans about Terry Branstad’s outstanding record of achievement, Governor Culver cannot hide from results of his failed leadership. Nowhere is that failed leadership more evident than in regards to the plight of Iowa’s unemployed and his inability to articulate a plan to stimulate Iowa’s economy and create new jobs.
“Governor Branstad took office at one of the most challenging times in our state’s history, facing an unemployment rate of 8.6%. Working with Iowans, Governor Branstad led Iowa out of that dark place, helped create nearly 300,000 jobs for Iowans, and left our state with an unemployment rate that was the lowest in the state’s history at that time.
“With news this week of another major Iowa employer laying off 1,000 hard working Iowans, it is time to bring back Terry Branstad’s proven… read more →

Huge Swing in Voter Registration to Iowa GOP Cuts Dem Edge in Half in 2010
DES MOINES – Republican Party of Iowa Chairman Matt Strawn today said the latest voter registration numbers reveal that Iowans are connecting with the Party’s principled solutions and lay the groundwork for widespread Republican victories this November. Since January 2010, Republicans have cut the Democrats’ voter registration lead by half. In January, Republicans trailed Democrats in voter registration by nearly 113,000. Today, the difference is just over 55,000 registered voters. Meanwhile, the number of registered Democrats is down by almost 23,000 and the number of registered Independents is down by 29,000 in the same time period.
“The new registration numbers are more evidence that Iowans are rejecting the failed leadership of Chet Culver and majority Democrats, while embracing Republican candidates who have principled solutions for the challenges facing our state. More and more Iowans continue to identify with our Republican leaders who will spur job growth in the private sector, reign in out-of-control state spending, and restore open and honest government in Iowa. We look forward to Independent voters and disaffected… read more →
