Terry Branstad hopes to energize the state of Iowa’s economy in the midst of a nationwide downturn by creating a welcoming environment for new small businesses and entrepreneurs to create jobs.

The former governor who is the current Republican gubernatorial candidate spoke Wednesday at the Best Western Regency Inn to attendees at the Iowa Association of Community College Trustees annual conference, which is being hosted by Marshalltown Community College.

Branstad said he saw where Iowa is ranked last in the nation in new business start-ups.

“That’s something we’ve got to change,” he said.

Branstad encouraged the community college administrators to try to help with the growth in new business and promote entrepreneurship. He commended community colleges for forming partnerships within their communities, particularly for those allowing high school students to earn college credit before they leave high school.

Branstad is running against incumbent Democrat Chet Culver this fall. He admitted there are challenges ahead for the state due to the economy, but said those challenges create opportunities.

“I’m excited about the future,” Branstad said. “I think our best days can be ahead of us if we work together.”

The state senator from Osceola flashed a big smile as she gave her first hug to Judy Davidson, chair of the county’s Republican Party. She then hugged Bill Fennelly, Scott County treasurer, and finished her introductory hugs with Carol Earnhardt, a candidate for the county board of supervisors.

Reynolds is campaigning as half of the GOP’s gubernatorial ticket headed by former Gov. Terry Branstad. She clearly impressed a crowd of about 100 gathered at Scott County Republican headquarters in Davenport.

The 50-year-old — often compared to former Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin — appeared enthused and happy to see so many people gathered months before the November election.

“I’m energized and encouraged,” she said in a loud, clear voice. “We’re seeing record numbers of people showing up at events like this.”

Reynolds, citing her 14 years as a county treasurer, said she considers herself a hard worker. “But I think I have met my match,” she said, referring to Branstad, the governor who served Iowans for four terms. “We need a true leader back in the office,” she added.

(URBANDALE) – Governor Branstad 2010 campaign manager Jeff Boeyink today released the following statement following the dismal report on I-JOBS released earlier today:

“These are short term construction jobs, not the long-term jobs Gov. Culver promised when he proposed I-Jobs. $1.7 billion for short term construction jobs is not a great return on investment for Iowa taxpayers. In fact, these short term jobs are costing Iowans over $240,000 a piece.

“Construction employment in Iowa is actually down 2,700 since the I-Jobs bill was passed and nearly 20,000 Iowans have been added to the rolls of the unemployed since this program began.

“In reality, the I-Jobs program has done next to nothing to create the long-term, sustainable jobs that Iowans so desperately need.

“These projects will only last until the money runs out. In fact, a number of these projects will need renovations by the time the state pays back the bond, which is more than two decades from now.

“It is time to again have a governor like Terry Branstad, who understands how to create long-term jobs in this state.”
